2017 Honda HR-V vs 2016 Honda HR-V

Serving Hamilton, Trenton, and West Windsor, NJ

For many SUV shoppers, smaller is better. The market for subcompact SUVs is highly competitive, thanks to efficient packaging and greater economy. At the very top of the small SUV market is the Honda HR-V, slotted between the smaller Fit and the larger CR-V. The 2016 HR-V carries over unchanged in 2017 except for one new exterior color. The HR-V is a masterpiece of clever packaging, fuel efficiency and spirited driving. It's the perfect choice for drivers seeking a fun-to-drive small SUV with big capabilities.

Which One Has Better Performance?

The HR-V is motivated by a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine delivering 141 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm, 127 lb-ft of torque @ 4,300 rpm, and fuel economy of 28 city/34 highway MPG in FWD configuration with the CVT automatic. A six-speed manual is available (25/33 MPG) as is an AWD/automatic model (27/31 MPG).

The HR-V offers goods acceleration, spirited driving, crisp handling and a comfortable ride. The AWD version provides extra traction on dusty roads or snow-covered highways. The available six-speed manual offers precise shifting, and the responsive CVT automatic is one of the best on the market, especially in Sport Mode. The HR-V leverages a tight suspension and properly weighted steering to take corners with aplomb.

What are the Differences in Appearances?

The big innovation in the 2017 HR-V is the replacement of the 2016's Alabaster Silver Metallic by Lunar Silver Metallic. The carryover exterior colors are Milano Red, Crystal Black Pearl, Misty Green Pearl, Deep Ocean Pearl, Modern Steel Metallic, White Orchid Pearl and Mulberry Metallic.

The pleasing exterior appearance of the HR-V is not simply a shrunken version of the CR-V. It's profile, especially when viewed sideways, is unique and almost coupe-like, thanks to its angled roof and sloping rear window. The HR-V rides on 17-inch alloy wheels, and higher trims feature a power moonroof. The top model comes standard with roof rails. The interior offers upscale materials and an efficient layout. EX-L models feature leather upholstery.

What are the Differences in Safety Features?

The HR-V is equipped with a full set of standard airbags (dual-stage/multiple-threshold front airbags, driver/front-passenger SmartVent side airbags and side curtain airbags), head restraints and seatbelts. HR-V offers a multi-angle rearview camera and Honda LaneWatch. For better traction, the available AWD model employs an Intelligent Control System. Other safety features include fog lights, Hill Start Assist, Brake Assist. Auto-Brake Hold and electric parking brake. The NHTSA awards the 2016 and 2017 Honda HR-V a five-star overall rating. KBB gives the HR-V an excellent overall rating of 9.4.
