Hamilton, NJ Honda Dealership Serving Trenton, Freehold, East Windsor and Princeton

Over the course of the past decade American car buyers have become enamored with the crossover as more auto manufacturers have started to develop them as a more fuel efficient and affordable option to the full-size SUV. Vehicles such as the 2016 Honda HR-V and CR-V now offer buyers all of the values once associated with the minivan or family station wagon, but with a much more modern look. They also offer many of the same features and conveniences found in the full-size SUV, but without the higher cost and reduced fuel economy.

Size

The 2016 CR-V is the larger of the two vehicles and typically lists for a higher price than the HR-V, depending on the trim level and options chosen. The 2016 CR-V is built around the same platform as the 2016 Civic, in comparison the HR-V uses the same basic platform as the 2016 Honda Fit. Thus the HR-V is classified as a "sub-compact" crossover, while the CR-V is classified as a "compact" crossover due to the obvious difference in size. The 2016 Honda HR-V has upped its game for this latest edition. Meeting challenges from the Honda CR-V, it has sharpened its looks, added more technologies, and increased its gas mileage. The two sedans may seem very similar at first glance, but the HR-V remains a leader.

The 2016 HR-V measures a full ten inches shorter than the 2016 CR-V, however both are relatively close in overall width. The HR-V comes in at 69.7 inches wide, while the HR-V measures a little more at 71.6 inches. If you are among the many people who work or shop in areas where parking lots tend to be smaller, you may find that HR-V is a better choice. However, by choosing the narrower vehicle, you and your passengers will be giving up a small amount of interior space.

When it comes to cargo hauling capacity, again you will giving up a little by choosing the smaller vehicle. The HR-V offers you a total of 24 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 59 cubic feet with them in the folded down position. On the other hand, the CR-V offers significantly more space at 35 cubic feet with the seats up and 71 cubic feet with them folded down. If you do a lot of shopping, you may find that you spend a lot of time in the HR-V with the rear seats folded flat for the added space this offers.

Specs

One of the bigger differences between the 2016 Honda CR-V and HR-V lies in the powertrain each of them has to offer. The HR-V comes equipped with a healthy 1.8 liter inline DOHC four cylinder engine which is connected to the front wheel drive via a Honda CVT (continuously variable transmission). This 138 hp engine and transmission combination nets an estimated 28 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway*.

The CR-V comes with a more powerful 2.4 liter DOHC inline four cylinder engine that pumps out a healthy 185 horsepower. This engine is also mated to the Honda CVT transmission for smooth shifting and maximum fuel economy. This particular combination offers drivers an exceptional 26 mpg in city driving and 33 mpg out on the highway*. What may surprise many buyers is that while the smaller vehicle gets better fuel economy in the city, the larger one does better on the highway.

Safety

Both models offer a slew of safety features, including side-cutain airbags, anti-lock brakes and a backup camera. This year the 2016 Honda CR-V will still offer a full suite of "Honda Sensing" active safety features such as emergency braking and steering. These features will not be offered on the HR-V, but you can add the Honda "Lane Watch" system to your HR-V that uses cameras mounted in the side view mirrors to let you see in your blind spots.
