Safety

One way that Honda works to set itself apart is to offer leading technology first. Toward that end, the 2016 Honda Accord is the only affordable sedan to offer an entire package of leading safety technologies on every edition. The Sonata limits many of these systems to the more expensive Limited editions. Both the Accord and the Sonata are offering a blind spot monitor and a lane departure warning. Forward collision warnings are backed up by automated braking that can act to reduce collision impact. In addition, the Honda Sensing system is enhanced by a steering assist that will actually correct the car's path when the driver doesn't respond quickly enough. The steering wheel on the Accord is now part of the system, actively vibrating when it senses lane departure dangers.

Performance Specs

The two sedans offer two powertrains and one sporty upgrade. The Accord can claim more power in every category. Adding value, the Accord engine is guaranteed not to need a tune-up for 100,000 miles. The Accord earns 185 horsepower, increasing to 189 in the Sport trim. The Sonata's I-4 earns only 178 horsepower, although it does increase that to 185 for its Limited edition. The Accord has an option of upgrading to a finely-tuned V-6 that cranks out 278 horsepower. The Sonata's turbo I-4 delivers 245 horsepower. The Accord still offers a six-speed manual as well as a CVT automatic and a six-speed automatic. For five of its trims, the Sonata's only transmission is a six-speed automatic. A dual clutch system is standard on the Sonata Eco. The Sonata's maximum fuel economy is 25 mpg city and 35 mpg highway*. The Accord has boosted its fuel economy to 27 mpg city and 37 mpg highway*.

Technology

With both sedans offering a 7-inch touchscreen and a six speaker stereo, dash tech starts out similar. Both offer HD radio, steering wheel audio controls, and standard USB ports. The Accord now offers an extra port in the center console. SMS text messaging is standard only on the Honda Accord. This interactive feature is almost as easy to use as the Bluetooth® hands-free phone system. Android Auto and Apple Play are standard on the Honda EX and higher editions. These systems work with specific smartphones to deliver more content. The Accord also has Pandora® as part of its pre-programmed system. This makes it even easier to use Bluetooth for audio streaming. HD Traffic Watch, Song by Voice and enhanced voice recognition are part of Honda's advanced navigation touchscreen system.
